Snuggling together for a family movie is a great way to spend some of these rainy days! We like to occasionally host Family Movies at the library, but you can do it at home too. You probably already have a streaming service – or at least a few favorite DVDs – to choose from, but did you know you can find movies on Hoopla too? Check out our downloads page to get the Hoopla app and start browsing!
Here are some fun ideas for enjoying movie night with your family.
- Watch a movie version of a favorite book. How does it compare to the book? What got added or left out? Did the movie improve the story?
- Watch two versions of the same movie, then compare and contrast (just like in school!). I’m a big fan of using animated Disney films compared to new live action versions (Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, the Lion King, the Jungle Book, Aladdin… the list goes on!), or you could go classic – Parent Trap or Freaky Friday, anyone? Which version do you like best? Why?
- Make it a theme night. Use the setting or the characters for the movie to create a whole event! Dress to match, and serve snacks that fit – if you’re watching Finding Nemo for movie night, wear your beach attire, eat goldfish crackers (or popcorn shrimp, if it’s dinner and a movie!), and hang out on inflatable pool floats to watch the movie.
However you decide to do Family Movie Night, don’t forget the popcorn!
